The Class We Want to Be – Back to School Year 5 and 6 

Help pupils begin the new school year with a shared understanding of what makes a positive, welcoming and successful classroom. The Class We Want to Be is an engaging 60-minute back-to-school lesson created for pupils in Years 5 and 6.

Throughout the lesson, children consider the attitudes and actions that help a class work well together. They discuss important qualities such as kindness, respect, fairness, teamwork and responsibility before deciding which ones should shape their classroom during the year ahead.

A series of realistic social situations encourages pupils to think carefully about how their choices and behaviour can affect others. Working collaboratively, they use their ideas to produce a positive class charter that reflects their shared values and expectations. The lesson concludes with each child making a personal promise about the contribution they will make to the class.
