This Year 5/6 English unit of work explores the novel Pig Heart Boy. It provides opportunities for the teaching of reading and writing skills based on the novel Pig Heart Boy by award-winning author Malorie Blackman.

There are specific activities to teach grammar, punctuation and vocabulary but teachers will identify further opportunities to meet the needs of the children in their classes. There are also clear links to science.

It is not intended to be a prescriptive unit of work where all activities are worked through one after the other, although it is structured chronologically. Teachers should select from, and adapt, the range of suggested activities for each section to meet the needs of the children they teach. Many of the suggested activities can be repeated throughout the book.
