The Wind in the Willows
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
This teaching resource (made up of a 115 slide PowerPoint and 19 worksheets) is designed to help KS2 children develop their reading comprehension skills. The resource is suitable for a range of abilities and will help children improve key reading (and writing) skills.
The range of activities in this unit of work offer opportunities for the teaching of reading and writing skills using extracts from the first 5 chapters of the classic story The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame as a focus. There are numerous versions of this novel available with different levels of challenge and teachers should select the one most suitable for the children they teach. This resource uses the original text which may need to be simplified for younger children. There are specific activities to teach grammar, punctuation and vocabulary which are aimed at Years 2 - 4, but teachers will identify further opportunities to meet the needs of the children in their classes.
It is not intended to be a prescriptive unit of work where all activities are worked through slavishly, although it is structured chronologically. Teachers should select from, and adapt, the range of suggested activities for each section as appropriate. Any activity may be repeated for different sections of the story. Some slides include additional information for teachers in the notes section.
